Christmas – the countdown!

The Christmas season is always a special time for the members of my ravelry-group. Each year we organise an Advent Calendar that is truly unique and lets us grow together more closely as a group. In this calendar everyone can contribute. Many of our group´s generous knitters share their Christmas recipies, their stories and some tips to make Christmas-themed decorations, among other things. I enjoy these little glimpses into everyone´s home and decoration style as well as into their kitchen (oh those cookies from last year!) tremendously. Knitters are one kind of a people, learning more about them is always truly rewarding and is enriching my life very much.

Mix It Up! (again)

Colours are a complex thing. As are fibres. And I enjoy to experiment with both when working with the ITO – fine yarn from Japan yarns. They are thin enough that it is very possible to work with two of them held together, creating a marled effect of colours and texture.

You can, for example, combine a hard with a smooth fibre. I like to spice up Urugami, which has a paper core, with the soft wool-mohair-silk blend Sensai that has a distinct halo. This way the texture of the resulting yarn is a mixture of the two. It has the strength of the Urugami, and the squishyness from Sensai. It is one of my favourite ITO combinations.

But let´s talk colours now, as I promised. Because noone has the time to knit swatches for everything, I just wrapped yarn around a white cardboard gift tag for my examples. It works well enough to illustrate the effect holding two or more threads of yarn together has on the overall colour of the resulting yarn and fabric.

 

Here I am combining Urugami once in cold Mint and once in warm Mauve with different Sensai colours (from top to bottom Pool Blue, Moss, Lemon, Tangerine, Crocus, White, Smoke Grey, Charcoal). The Sensai colours blend with the Urugami shade resulting in much softer stripes than the Sensai colours alone. Also, that both colours peak out looks very appealing and gives the knitted piece some depth.

When using this technique sparsely, only occasionally adding in a second thread in a knitted piece, the parts worked with two threads, the motifs, will look almost printed. I did that in my Imprinta scarf. The look is so striking that it inspired the shawl´s naming. And in several other designs I have been working with more than one thread at a time also. Among them are North Sea Mist, Goliatha, Abacatha, Rheindrops and Lineares. Knitting any of these will get you started on your journey of exploring fibres and open up your horizon to completely new possibilities in the world of knitting. If I say so it must be true, right? 

 

Another way to use the blending effect of working with several strands is to wind a yarn with four strands of one colour. Next wind a yarn with three strands of the base colour and one strand of a contrast colour. Then wind a 2-2 yarn and a 1-3 yarn, and finally a yarn that consists of four strands of only the new colour. You have created your own gradient yarn!

Greydient

There is something special about grey accessories and garments. They need to appeal through texture and construction alone, not being able to add a colour highlight here or there, or to catch the eye by a particularly bold or gorgeous shade. This constraint by design makes them often look very stylish. So I was thrilled when Geilsk agreed to send four balls of their beautiful Bomuld og Uld for me to play with, all in a different shade of grey. And Greydient is what came out of my experiments.

Light slip stitch stripes add a bit of texture and break up the stocking stitch background of stripes in darker shades of grey in this semi-circular shawl. At the same time, eyelets set an accent in the stocking stitch stripes and make the shawl deeper by adding an extra stitch each. You will need less than one of each of the four skeins to make the shawlette. And of course you are not restricted to greys at all! I cannot wait to find out what colour choices knitters worldwide will make. Some gorgeous shawls already came about in the test knit. – And what will your Greydient look like?

Graue Accessoires und Kleidungsstücke haben etwas Besonderes. Sie müssen allein durch Textur und Konstruktion wirken, ohne dass sie hier oder da einen Farbakzent setzen oder das Auge durch eine besonders ansprechende Farbe beglücken könnten. Diese prinzipielle Zurückgenommenheit lässt sie oft sehr elegant wirken. Ich war also mehr als glücklich, als Geilsk zugestimmt hat, mir vier Knäuel ihrer wunderschönen Bomuld og Uld in verschiedenen Grauschattierungen zu schicken, um damit zu spielen. Das Ergebnis meiner Nadelexperimente ist Greydient.

Helle Hebemaschenstreifen setzen die glatt rechts gestrickten Streifen im Hintergrund optisch und strukturell gegeneinander ab. Löcher akzentuieren die dunkleren glatt rechten Streifen geben dem Tuch Tiefe, indem mit jedem von ihnen eine Masche zugenommen wird. Für das kleine Tuch braucht man nicht mehr als vier Knäuel Bomuld og Uld bzw. 200 g Sockenwolle. Und natürlich gibt es keine Verpflichtung, in Grau zu arbeiten! Ich bin sehr gespannt auf die bunten Interpretationen der Strickwelt, die durch das Netz so unwahrscheinlich nah rückt. Meine Testerinnen haben schon wunderschöne Tücher ernadelt. – Und wie wird dein Greydient aussehen?

Kouki-Hearts

 

The Christmas season is the time of expressing your love for the people close to you, the time to surprise them with a special present, and to show your affection by spending time with your loved ones. So what better occasion could there be to cast on this shawl, Kouki-Hearts? (Except for Valentine´s maybe. I might have to do a relaunch of the pattern on Valentine´s Day.)

An subtle pattern of knit and purl stitches embosses the fabric of this special shawl with hearts, while the colourful stripes add more overt visual interest. The narrow triangular shape creates a cosy accessory. Using a yarn with some lustre, like Ito Kouki (ramie and silk), allows the light to showcase the hearts. Ito Kouki does this in a way I haven´t seen before in any other yarn. Treat yourself to something special and make an Ito purchase – you will be sure to enjoy it! – or do what my test knitters did and find other shiny yarns to make this shawl even more unique. I hope knitting this shawl gives you as much joy as it gave me.

 

 

Die Weihnachtszeit ist die Zeit, in der wir unsere Zuneigung und Liebe für die Menschen, die uns am nächsten sind ausdrücken – mit einem besonderen Geschenk und der Zeit, die wir mit ihnen verbringen. Was für einen besseren Moment als genau diesen jetzt könnte es also geben, um dies “herzige” Tuch anzuschlagen? Das dreieckige Tuch wird von der Spitze zur längsten Seite hin gearbeitet. Ein subtiles Herzmuster aus rechten und linken Maschen sowie farbige Streifen geben ihm das gewisse Extra. Gestrickt wird mit Ito Kouki, ein Traum aus Ramie, einer Pflanzenfaser, die seidenähnliche Eigenschaften hat, und Spinnenseide. Ein Traum aus glänzenden Fasern, wie ich sie noch nicht erlebt habe! Dotlets│Pünktchen

I promised two new pattern releases together with the Advent calendar. So here is the first which also makes for a quick knit of a last-minute Christmas present. The fashionable Dotlets cuffs are designed with no thumb shaping to be as simple and pleasurable to knit as possible. The dotted slip stitch pattern is gorgeous without being complicated to knit, and makes a perfect showcase for that special skein of variegated yarn. Pair it with a solid colour that contrasts strongly, and watch the colours shine!

Zwei Veröffentlichungen mit dem Adventskalender habe ich versprochen, zwei Veröffentlichungen sollt ihr bekommen. Hier ist schon mal die erste. Die stylischen Pulswärmer im Pünktchenmuster halten die Hände warm und stricken sich einfach und schnell, sind also als Last-Minute-Weihnachtsgeschenk sehr geeignet. Das Hebemaschenmuster der Pünktchen ist unkompliziert und kann auch von Anfängern gemeistert werden.

Als Hauptfarbe bietet sich ein Garn mit Farbverlauf an, das mit einem einfarbigen Garn kombiniert wird. Der Kontrast sollte ausreichend stark sein, damit sich die verspielten Punkte herausbilden.

Gestrickt habe ich mit Ito Rokku Tennen und Ito Rokku. Wenn ihr je eine Kone kauft, könnt ihr davon zwei Paar Pünktchenwärmer gestricken. Wollleidenschaft unterwegs │Yarn passion to go

 

Am letzten Märzwochenende ist es so weit, die Internationale Fachmesse für Handarbeit und Hobby findet mal wieder in Köln statt. Ich werde da sein und mich mit der Atmosphäre von Kreativität und Wollrausch aufladen. Letztes Jahr war es sehr inspirierend. Ich habe auch viel Neues über Wolle gelernt. Und es ist natürlich immer toll unter Menschen zu sein, die für und von der Wolle leben. Wenn jemand von euch da sein wird und mich treffen möchte, schreibt mir einfach eine Nachricht per Blogkontakt, E-Mail oder Ravelry und wir machen etwas aus!

On the last weekend in March the annual International trade fair for creative handicraft + hobby supplies takes place in Cologne. I´ll be there and breathe the atmosphere of creativity and yarn enthusiasm. Last year I felt extremely inspired and learnt a lot about wool. Most importantly it was great to be among people who are passionate about yarn and make a living off it. meritence

Die Meritence, mein neuestes Design, ist ein guter Schulterwärmer. Das ist  besonders jetzt, wo das Wetter draußen herbstlich wird ganz praktisch. Für mich als Strickjackenmensch ist sie eh perfekt. Ich designe am liebsten Dinge, die ich selbst gerne trage.

My new Meritence is great for keeping the shoulders warm, which is especially handy now that the temperatures are dropping and autumn is approaching fastly. I am a cardigan person anyway, and I like to wear them open. So this cardigan is getting worn a lot!

Beim Teststrick hat sie uns ganz schön gefordert. Es gab irgendwie immer noch ein Feature zu verbessern und noch eine Technik besser zu beschreiben. Für die Falzmasche habe ich sogar ein eigenes Tutorial geschrieben, siehe mein letzter Post. Aber nun ist es vollbracht. Die Ärmelkappen sitzen perfekt mit genau der richtigen Rundung da wo es sein soll und für die ungewöhnlichen Taschen gibt es ein Schritt-für-Schritt Fototutorial. Außerdem habe ich einige Tipps eingefügt, wie die Strickjacke der eigenen Körperform angepasst werden kann.

It was a challenge to put the how-to into words though. My test knitters had many suggestions, and I was improving feature after feature and describing the techniques in more detail and with pictures. There´s a whole new tutorial for the cording stitch (see my last post). And now it´s finally done. The sleeve caps are just right and form their bows exactly in the right places for a snug fit at the shoulders, and there´s a photo tutorial for the pockets which have an unusual construction. I also added some tips on customizing the fit.

Die Wolle hat Maike alias Das Regenbogenschaf gefärbt. Das Blau leuchtet und schimmert mehr, als man mit Fotos einfangen könnte. Maike hat ein echtes Talent für Farben. Auch die Faser an sich ist traumhaft zu verstricken und auch zu tragen. Die fünzig Prozent Tencel-Anteil geben dem Gestrick seidenartige Eigenschaften. Tencel ist eine Pflanzenfaser, die elegant schimmert und bei warmen Temperaturen kühlt. Und das Beste: Es müssen keine armen Raupen dafür sterben.

 

The yarn was hand-dyed by Maike alias Das Regenbogenschaf. The blue shines and sparkles more than pictures can tell. Maike really has a great colour sense. And the fibres themselves are also amazing to work with. The yarn is half wool, half tencel, which gives the knitting a silk-like appearance. Tencel is a plant fibre with a silk-like sheen and is cooling on the skin when worn in warm temperatures. And the best is: You get all this without sacrificing a single caterpillar.

Gestrickt wird die Jacke in einem Stück von oben nach unten, die A-Form ist figurfreundlich und Taschen sowie Schalkragen geben dem Stück Charakter. Das Stricken ist durch das viele glatt rechts sehr entspannt. Und gerade wenn es vielleicht beginnt ein wenig eintönig zu werden, kommen die Taschen ins Spiel. Auf die Konstruktion bin ich besonders stolz. Sie fallen schön lässig, was durch sparsam gesetzte Falzmaschen und verkürzte Reihen erreicht wird.

The cardigan is knit in one piece from the top down, featuring a flattering A-line, unique whimsical baggy pockets and a huge collar.  You´ll have a relaxed time knitting all that stocking stitch, and just when you think you´ve had enough, the pockets will entertain you with their unusual construction. Simple cording stitches and short rows make them work.

Tsuru

Ich fange also gleich mal damit an, Euch zu erzählen, woran ich so arbeite: Gerade ist das Muster für das Dreiecktuch “Tsuru” fertig geworden, das wirklich ungewöhnlich schön fällt. Es ist das exquisiteste Tuch, das ich bisher gestrickt habe, so viel ist sicher. Das Ito Garn ist schon besonders. Ich habe immer zwei Qualitäten auf einmal verarbeitet, weil die Fäden sehr dünn sind. Dabei habe ich das flauschig-mohairige Ito-Sensai, das Ito-Urugami mit Papierkern und das Ito-Tetsu mit Metallanteil miteinander kombiniert. Es war ein Experiment mit Wollqualitäten. Ich war sehr fasziniert, wie die Kombination der verschiedenen Wollsorten die Eigenschaften vom Gestrick verändert hat. Das Ergebnis ist ein Tuch mit wirklich sehr besonderem Faltenwurf. Aber auch meine TeststrickerInnen, die nicht alle das Originalgarn verwendet haben, haben wunderschöne Tücher gestrickt. Schaut hier und lasst Euch inspirieren!

So I´ll start with telling you what I am working on: I´ve just released the Tsuru pattern, it´s a triangular shawl with an extraordinary drape. It´s the most luxurious shawl I have ever knit in my life, that´s for sure. The Ito yarn really is precious. I always held the strands of two qualities together, as the yarn is very thin. So I combined the fluffy Ito-Sensai mohair fibres, the Ito-Urugami paper core-fibres and the partly metallic Ito-Tetsu. It was a study in materials. I really enjoyed experimenting with the different yarn alliances and studying the new properties of the resulting fabric. It was a great experience.

My test knitters, even if not all of them used the original yarn, knit up beautiful shawls as well. Have a look at their projects and get inspired!

Meine Inspiration war das Origami, wohl zum Teil, weil das Garn aus Japan kommt und zum Teil, weil das Urugami einen Papierkern hat. Irgendwie fasziniert mich der Gedanke, Papier zu verstricken. Jedenfalls habe ich das Tuch nach der bekanntesten Figur des Origami benannt, dem Kranich. Das bedeutet “Tsuru” nämlich auf Deutsch: Kranich. Die klaren Linien in der Tuchkonstruktion sollen an die scharfen Kniffe der Papierkunst erinnern.

Also, schlagt schnell an und Ihr habt noch zwei Wochen Zeit bis zum großen Herbst-KAL, um mit dem Tuch fertig zu werden!

My inspiration was the Japanese art of origami, maybe partly because the Urugami with its paper content really got my imagination going, and partly, because the Ito yarn comes from Japan. So I named the shawl for the most well-known figure of the ancient craft, the crane. That´s what “Tsuru” means, crane. And the crisp geometric lines in the shawl construction are supposed to evoke the papercraft’s creases.

2014

Mir wird gerade erst so richtig klar, dass 2014 schon in vollem Gange ist. Ich hatte einen etwas langsamen Start dies Jahr, um es mal sehr vorsichtig auszudrücken. – Mein Tipp für euch: Falls ihr krank seid, geht besser zum Arzt! Ok, außer mir braucht wahrscheinlich niemand diesen völlig übertrieben offensichtlichen Hinweis. Immerhin kann ich ihn jetzt jederzeit nachlesen, egal wo ich gerade bin. 😉 – Zum Glück bin ich jetzt, wo die Antibiotika anfangen zu wirken, wieder da!

I am only just now realizing that it´s a New Year already. To say that I´ve had a slow start into 2014 is putting it mildly. – Word to the wise: If you are sick, go to the doctor. Duh. I guess there won´t be many people in need of hearing this simple and rather obvious advice. – Luckily, now that the antibiotics are doing their job, I am back!

Immerhin hab ich in meiner Zwangspause gestrickt, was zum Glück fast in jeder Lebenslage geht. Ich habe phantastische Wolle auf den Nadeln. Die kupferne Farbe ist “Feentraum” aus reiner Maulbeerseide und wurde im Wollkenschloß handgefärbt. Ich wünschte, die Fotos würden auch nur annähernd zeigen, wie genial sie changiert. Es ist wirklich ein Märchentraum mit ihr zu stricken. Außerdem versuche ich mich zum ersten Mal an Mohair. Mensch, ist die ergiebig! Aber bis daraus das von der großzügigen Spenderin (huhu, Sandra!) bestellte Top wird, dauert es noch etwas. Ich muss mich noch einstricken.

But I´ve been knitting over the holidays, which luckily can be done in almost all predicaments. I have some amazing yarn on my needles. The copper coloured yarn is called “Feentraum”, fairy dream. It´s extremely luxurious: 100% mulberry silk that has been hand-dyed by a friend of mine. I wish the pictures would give you a better idea of its shimmer. It´s mesmerizing. – I am also giving mohair a try, for the first time! I cannot believe this, but 50 g might actually be sufficient for a summer top. Until I´ll have a design to present, it´s going to be some time though. I am still getting used to the yarn. It behaves very differently from the yarn I usually work with.

Außerdem habe ich eine Liste mit Neujahrsvorsätzen gemacht. Sie erinnert mich sehr an die vom letzten Jahr. Also war ich wohl nicht sehr erfolgreich. Aber ich gebe so schnell nicht auf. Insgesamt bin ich eigentlich sogar ganz zufrieden mit dem letzten Jahr. Ich habe regelmäßiger als früher Muster geschrieben, meine eigene Gruppe auf Ravelry gegründet und mit wunderbar talentierten deutschen Handfärberinnen zusammengearbeitet.

And I´ve made a list of New Year´s resolutions. It´s curiously similar to the list of last year. Which means that I have not been particularly successful. 😉 It doesn´t mean I´ll stop trying though. Plus, all in all, I am really happy with the last year. I have been designing more regularly than I used to, started my own group on Ravelry and been co-operating with some extremely talented German hand-dyers.

Für dies Jahr habe ich auch ein gutes Gefühl. Es ist viel geplant. Ich fange damit an, dass jede(r) StrickerIn, der/die sich bis Ende Januar für meinen Newsletter einträgt, einen Coupon-Code bekommt, mit dem er/sie sich eines meiner Muster auf Ravelry für umsonst herunterladen kann. Andererseits wäre es einfach nicht halb so schön, ohne den Austausch mit euch. Vor allem ist es ja wohl der Sinn vom Musterschreiben, die Muster auch zu teilen. Also ist alles gut.

But then, communicating with knitters has been the source of a lot of happiness for me in the past. And, of course, sharing is the purpose of writing knitting patterns. So all is good and well. 🙂

muk

Als ich dieses herrlich goldene Garn von Shibui zum ersten Mal gesehen habe, hatte ich direkt eine vage Idee von einer kleinen, vom Jugendstil inspirierten Strick-Kollektion. Beim Designen habe ich an die Frauen in den Bildern des tschechischen Malers Alfons Maria Mucha gedacht und mir vorgestellt, was sie wohl im Winter tragen würden. Daher auch der Name Muk. Für “Mucha”, und zwar so verändert, um es der englisch-sprechenden Zunge nicht zu schwer zu machen. 😉

When I first saw a skein of this beautiful shining golden Shibui yarn, I had a vague idea of a small Art Nouveau inspired knitwear series. And so I designed the Muk (pronounced “mook”) accessory set while pondering what the women in the pictures by a Czech painter of the epoch, Alphonse Mucha, would wear in winter. Muk is for Mucha. Get it? 😉

Mucha hat einen verspielten, romantischen Stil mit vielen klaren und zarten Linien, wie sie für den Jugendstil typisch sind.

Mucha has a playful, delicate style, with a lot of clear-cut lines, as are typical for the Art Nouveau.

Das war also meine Vorgabe für das Muk-Set. Und führt Anja im Bild oben rechts nicht die ultimative Mucha-Pose vor?

So that is what I went for in the Muk set. And isn´t Anja demonstrating the ultimate Mucha-pose in the close-up of her head?

Das Set besteht aus Schal, Mütze und Pulswärmern. Auf Ravelry finden sich alle Angaben zum Wollverbrauch, zur Maschenprobe und andere wichtige Informationen sowie mehr Bilder und natürlich das Muster selbst. Ich bin super glücklich mit der Wolle, die ich ausgesucht habe, Shibui staccato. Die Farbe nennt sich “flaxen”, also flachsfarben. Im richtigen Licht schimmert sie fast golden. Der Schimmer geht natürlich auf den Seidenanteil von dreißig Prozent zurück. Die Wolle an sich ist weich und fluffig. Probiert sie unbedingt mal aus, wenn ihr noch nie mit ihr gestrickt habt!

And I am more than happy with the yarn I used, Shibui staccato. The colourway is named “flaxen”. In the right light it shines almost golden; the shine, of course, is partly due to the rather high silk content of thirty per cent. The yarn really is lovely to work with. It is soft and squishy and has a great stitch definition. I highly recommend to try it out!

Das Muster oben im Bild ist das Falzmuster (englisch “welting pattern”). Wie der Name sagt, besteht es aus Falzen beziehungsweise gewellten Querrippen. Die Falzungen im Gestrick entstehen dadurch, dass jede zweite Masche über drei oder mehr Reihen abgehoben wird. Dann folgt wieder eine Reihe rechte Maschen. Man sieht sie im Bild nicht, weil es die Rückseite zeigt. Dort bilden die abgehobenen Maschen ein Karomuster, das ich sehr effektvoll finde. Es ist das Muster für das Set. Aber dass ich die Rückseite von einem Muster verwende, bedeutet auch, dass man den Beanie auch auf links gedreht tragen kann. Leider habe ich vergessen, davon ein Foto zu machen. Und ich habe das Set schon an Anja verschenkt. Die Maschenprobe ist längst aufgeribbelt. Ihr müsst also mein Wort dafür nehmen, dass es so ist.

The stitch pattern in the image above is the welting pattern. As the name says, it produces a welted fabric. This is achieved by slipping every second stitch for a number of rows. I used the wrong side as right side as I like the checked effect of the slipped stitches a lot. This also means that the hat can be worn inside out for a welted look. Sadly I forgot to take pictures of that and now I have already given away the accessories to Anja. I even unraveled my swatch to make the most of the yarn I had and don´t have that either to take a picture of. So please take my word for it, and have a great time knitting your own Mucha-style accessories!
