Mix It Up! (again)

Colours are a complex thing. As are fibres. And I enjoy to experiment with both when working with the ITO – fine yarn from Japan yarns. They are thin enough that it is very possible to work with two of them held together, creating a marled effect of colours and texture.

You can, for example, combine a hard with a smooth fibre. I like to spice up Urugami, which has a paper core, with the soft wool-mohair-silk blend Sensai that has a distinct halo. This way the texture of the resulting yarn is a mixture of the two. It has the strength of the Urugami, and the squishyness from Sensai. It is one of my favourite ITO combinations.

But let´s talk colours now, as I promised. Because noone has the time to knit swatches for everything, I just wrapped yarn around a white cardboard gift tag for my examples. It works well enough to illustrate the effect holding two or more threads of yarn together has on the overall colour of the resulting yarn and fabric.

 

Here I am combining Urugami once in cold Mint and once in warm Mauve with different Sensai colours (from top to bottom Pool Blue, Moss, Lemon, Tangerine, Crocus, White, Smoke Grey, Charcoal). The Sensai colours blend with the Urugami shade resulting in much softer stripes than the Sensai colours alone. Also, that both colours peak out looks very appealing and gives the knitted piece some depth.

When using this technique sparsely, only occasionally adding in a second thread in a knitted piece, the parts worked with two threads, the motifs, will look almost printed. I did that in my Imprinta scarf. The look is so striking that it inspired the shawl´s naming. And in several other designs I have been working with more than one thread at a time also. Among them are North Sea Mist, Goliatha, Abacatha, Rheindrops and Lineares. Knitting any of these will get you started on your journey of exploring fibres and open up your horizon to completely new possibilities in the world of knitting. If I say so it must be true, right? 

 

Another way to use the blending effect of working with several strands is to wind a yarn with four strands of one colour. Next wind a yarn with three strands of the base colour and one strand of a contrast colour. Then wind a 2-2 yarn and a 1-3 yarn, and finally a yarn that consists of four strands of only the new colour. You have created your own gradient yarn!

Hier wird nicht geklecktert! │Go Big!

Mit meinen Designs versuche ich, wann immer es geht, etwas Neues auszuprobieren. Die RIESENMASCHEN in diesem Tuch sind zwar nicht meine Erfindung, aber ich habe sie zum ersten Mal gestrickt. Und besonders oft habe ich sie auch noch nicht gesehen. Das Faszinierende ist, dass diese Maschen größer und dicker sind als die Maschen vom kraus rechten Hintergrund. Sie scheinen auf ihnen zu reiten und geben dem Gestrick eine einmalige Plastizität. Wie man diese langen Linien überdimensionierter Stiche arbeitet, habe ich im Strickmuster mit einem Fototutorial genau und Schritt-für-Schritt erklärt. Im Grunde sind es wiederaufgenommene Fallmaschen.

Für das Tuch braucht es weniger als fünfhundert Meter Lace- oder Sockengarn. Ich habe mit dem fantastischen Ito Urugami in mint und in white gearbeitet. Die Kombination mit Ito Sensai als Beilaufgarn ist eine absolut glückliche und traumhafte Verbindung. Seit meinem Tsuru-Tuch kann ich gar nicht mehr damit aufhören, Ideen für diese beiden Garne zu entwickeln. Natürlich ist die Kombination von Mohair und Fallmaschen weniger ideal, aber mir war es die Sache wert. Wer anders denkt, steigt auf weniger hakige Fasern um oder lässt den zweiten Faden einfach weg.

Mit nur hundertsechundzwanzig Zentimetern Länge ist ein ein wirklich süßes und besonders kleines Tuch. Das Muster enthält Angaben, wie man es ganz einfach verlängern kann – in Abhängigkeit von der vorhandenen Wollmenge oder der gewünschten Tuchgröße.

When I am designing, I enjoy very much trying new techniques or new construction or anything that´s new to me at all. I have never before knit the GIANT STITCHES of this shawl, in fact I haven´t seen them very often in a design. What´s fascinating about them is that the huge stitches are larger and wider than the regular stitches of the garter stitch background. The huge stitches cross perpendicular to the garter ridges. The result is an asymmetrical triangle scarf that undulates with offset textures and subtle dimensions – a stunning effect that looks much more complicated than it is. You´ll just be dropping stitches and picking them up again. There is a photo tutorial in the directions explaining the process step-by-step.

You´ll need no more than five hundred metres of lace or sock weight yarn – possibly in combination with a second thread of the same length, both held together. I have been working with the incredible Ito Urugami in mint and white. Combining Ito Urugami with Ito Sensai is a very lucky and gorgeous choice. Ever since I used them both in the Tsuru shawl I cannot stop coming up with new ideas for these two yarns. Of course the combination of mohair and drop stitches is less ideal – but it was worth it to me. If you don´t want to bother with the extra hooky mohair fibres, you can choose a different kind of yarn or omit the second thread completely.

With a length of only a hundred and six centimetres the shawl is on the small side, after knitting many large shawls  needed a shorter one for a change. However, the pattern gives directions for making the shawl longer – depending on the amount of yarn at hand or the desired dimensions.

Nebel über dem Meer. So sieht die See jetzt, wo es etwas wärmer geworden ist, allerdings nicht mehr aus. Das ist aber kein Problem, in anderen Farben gestrickt, evoziert das Tuch ganz andere Assoziationen. Wovon rede ich eigentlich? Von genau diesem Tuch:

Mist over the sea. It is not how the sea is looking right now anymore, since the temperatures are rising, I am aware of that. No problem for you though, as you can knit the shawl in any colour you like and make it more season appropriate. So what am I talking about? It´s this shawl:

 

Für mich wird das Tuch aber immer der “Nordseenebel “bleiben. Teststricker haben ihre Projekte schon “Nebelschleier” getauft, was wegen dem “Schleiermuster”, in dem das Tuch gearbeitet wird, ziemlich clever ist. Das Nebelhafte wird noch durch die zarte Textur der Ito-Garne Sensai, ein Mohair-Seidengemisch, und Urugami aus Papier- und Wollfasern unterstrichen.

Das Schaltuch besteht aus zwei sichelförmigen Hälften. Sie werden vom Mittelpunkt der Längsachse aus nach außen gestrickt. Für die erste Hälfte werden am Ende jeder Reihe jedes Mal einige Maschen hinzugefügt. Die zweite Hälfte wird gegengleich, aber diesmal mit verkürzten Reihen, geformt. Es ist bei diesem Tuch besonders wichtig, das passende Garn zu finden. Eine Maschenprobe ist unbedingt notwendig um sicherzustellen, dass die Wolle zum offenen Schleiermuster passt und dass die richtige Nadelstärke gewählt wurde. Besonders gut geeignet sind flauschige Fasern wie Mohair, Alpaka und Kaschmir. Das Muster gibt es wie gewohnt auf Ravelry.

Ich hoffe, euch macht das Stricken genausoviel Freude wie mir. Tatsächlich hatte ich eine so gute Zeit, dass ich gleich noch ein Tuch mit ähnlicher Konstruktion entworfen habe. Mehr davon die nächsten Tage!

For me, this shawl will always be linked to that image of the North Sea Mist though. An association that is evoked in both the colour and the sensual texture of Ito Sensai’s mohair-silk and Urugami’s wool-paper yarns.

The shawl is knit in two halves that radiate from the centre of the shawl out along the long axis. Formed by first adding stitches, then using short rows, the increases create a subtly curved crescent moon for each half. The veil stitch pattern produces a light and open fabric. Choosing the right yarn is crucial, so be sure to swatch to test which yarn and needle size works best to create the openness of the fabric when you give the pattern a go. The pattern is available on Ravelry now.

I hope you´ll enjoy knitting this shawl. I had such a great time that I made another one using a very similar aproach to shaping. Coming up!

stealing from the summer

Here in Germany the temperatures are sky-high, the sun is shining like there´s no tomorrow and everyone´s in a good and relaxed mood. I really want to savour this wonderful summer spirit for as long as I can. So I knit up one of its symbols: A flower. Actually I knit a few of the Red Julaines, as I named them for a girl I once knew. They now embellish my home and accessories. It´s really beautiful to look at and also a bit weird that a nice view, this tiny peek of creativity, brightens my days  that much. And I can always attach one of the flowers to a skein of yarn and have an instant gift for a fellow knitter.

By the way, the yarn in the baskets is the amazingly lovely organic merino yarn from Rosy Green Wool. Finally a chance to knit merino with a clear conscience! Everything´s fair and green and good. I cannot wait to share with you what I´m working on with those fibres. It´s a larger project, so it should become winter, winter!, until I can tell you more. — I met Rosy this spring in Cologne, and am really enjoying our small collaboration.

The flowers are knit with mohair leftovers in linen stitch at a tight gauge which gives them an almost felted look. You´ll find all the details as well as the pattern on Ravelry, as always (and you don´t need to be a member for either – the info or the purchase).

Schon seit Urzeiten will ich ein leichtes Sommertop entwerfen. Beim Brainstorming habe ich allerdings kein bisschen an Mohair gedacht. Wieso auch. Die Idee war ja für die Sommergarderobe zu stricken. Aber als mir Sandra vor Monaten zwei Mohairknäuel geschenkt hat, wußte ich, dass daraus ein ärmelloses Shirt entstehen würde. Ich war wirklich überrascht wie sehr mir das Stricken von Mohair gefällt, ich kann mich noch zu gut an die 80er Jahre erinnern. Aber es ist ganz anders als meine Vorurteile meinen. Mir gefällt der “Flausch”, er hat etwas sehr Feminines. Und wenn man mit großen Nadeln leicht und luftig strickt, ist Mohair für den (nord)deutschen Sommer sehr geeignet, wie ich festgestellt habe.

Allerdings war ich mit meiner ersten Version von einem Sommertop noch nicht ganz zufrieden. Ribbeln wollte ich aber nicht, das Top war durchaus tragbar und eigentlich sogar ganz hübsch, und so habe ich neue Wolle besorgt und noch einmal angefangen. Diesmal war alles perfekt. Jedenfalls beim Stricken. Es gab dann aber noch immer ein paar Hindernisse. Erstmal hatte das alles schon ziemlich lange gedauert, dann kam auch noch hinzu, dass der Photoshoot mehrmals ins Wasser gefallen ist, weil Anja super viel zu tun hatte, krank war oder es ganz buchstäblich geregnet, was sage ich, geschüttet hat. Und so ist es gekommen, dass es Juli geworden ist, bis das Muster fertig war. Aber besser spät als nie. Zum Glück strickt sich Morla mit nur 16 Maschen auf 10 Zentimeter blitzschnell. Und man braucht fast keine Wolle, nur etwa 530 bis 882 Meter, je nach Größe (32-54).

I have wanted to make a light summer top for quite some time. What I hadn´t anticipated was that I would choose mohair yarn, of all fibres. I got the idea when Sandra, a good friend of mine who´s a passionate knitter, gave me two beautiful skeins of yarn months ago. To my surprise I really liked the way the mohair formed a knitted fabric with that thick halo and fluffy appearance. It has a unique appeal to it, no other fibre quite comes close. But I wasn´t completely happy with the sample I had knit up. I did not want to rip it back either, actually the top was quite nice, and so I ordered some more yarn to make the final version. Then add a deluge of delays, for once my general slow pace of writing patterns, then the crammed schedule and health (or lack thereof) of my model plus a real and very untimely deluge from the sky, and we have a summer top pattern being released in July. The plus side is that knitted at the extremely loose gauge of only four stitches per inch, you´ll be done knitting it up before you know it. Also, the yardage is ridiculously small. Depending on size (ranging from 32 to 54), you´ll need anything between 580 and 965 yards. I´m sure you´ll be able to make use of this top late into fall, worn as a layer, the mohair does help you keep warm.

alte geschichten│old stuff

Ist der Februar wirklich schon mehr als zur Häfte rum? Ich kann´s nicht glauben, wie schnell die Zeit verfliegt. Ich habe ganz vergessen, euch zu erzählen dass ich ein paar alte Muster überarbeitet habe. Sie haben ein neues Layout bekommen und ich habe sie meinen neueren Standards angepaßt. Man bekommt ja mit der Zeit ein bischen Übung beim Musterschreiben.

Die Anleitung für die Eulenspiegel-Stulpen habe ich zum ersten Mal in einem pdf zusammengefaßt. Sie sind das allererste Muster, das ich je geschrieben habe. Ich hatte bisher nur auf meinem Blog über sie gesprochen. Aber jetzt habe ich sie auch bei Ravelry eingestellt, es ist einfach praktisch, um Projekte zu verlinken und zu gucken, was andere Strickerinnen so daraus machen. — Da fällt mir auf, dass ich also doch schon einmal mit Mohair gearbeitet habe. Es ist nur ziemlich lange her.

Is it the second half of February already? I cannot believe how time flies by. I almost forgot to tell you that I´ve been looking over some old patterns of mine, gave them a new layout and made them match my current standards for knitting patterns. `Cause, you know, one does get some practise over time.

And I´ve also for the first time written down the pattern for the Eulenspiegel cuffs in pdf format. They were the first pattern I ever wrote. Originally I had just talked about them on my old blog. Now I´ve also added them to the Ravelry pattern database, so that you can browse other projects. — Btw, I just realized that this means I have been working with mohair before. It´s just been a while. And it´s a totally different thing to use it in a garment.

Außerdem habe ich zwei alte Tutorials aufpoliert. Wenn ihr auf meinem alten Blog schon mitgelesen habt, erinnert ihr euch vielleicht an meine Maschenmarkierer aus Faden und meine Gedanken zum “richtigen” Wickeln eines Rundschals mit doppelter Verdrillung.

Und das Beste am Ganzen: alle Muster und Tutorials sind umsonst! Irgendwie muß ich ja schließlich mal Danke dafür sagen, dass ihr mein Design unterstützt und so absolut liebe Kommentare schreibt. 🙂 Ohne euch könnte ich lange nicht so viel Zeit mit Designen verbringen und der Spaß wäre auch irgendwie weg. Also, habt sehr viel Vergnügen mit den Mustern und Tutorials! Ihr findet sie hier. – Falls ihr nicht allein stricken mögt, seid ihr herzlich eingeladen, in meiner Gruppe vorbeizuschauen und bei unserem gemütlichen KAL mitzumachen. 2014

Mir wird gerade erst so richtig klar, dass 2014 schon in vollem Gange ist. Ich hatte einen etwas langsamen Start dies Jahr, um es mal sehr vorsichtig auszudrücken. – Mein Tipp für euch: Falls ihr krank seid, geht besser zum Arzt! Ok, außer mir braucht wahrscheinlich niemand diesen völlig übertrieben offensichtlichen Hinweis. Immerhin kann ich ihn jetzt jederzeit nachlesen, egal wo ich gerade bin. 😉 – Zum Glück bin ich jetzt, wo die Antibiotika anfangen zu wirken, wieder da!

I am only just now realizing that it´s a New Year already. To say that I´ve had a slow start into 2014 is putting it mildly. – Word to the wise: If you are sick, go to the doctor. Duh. I guess there won´t be many people in need of hearing this simple and rather obvious advice. – Luckily, now that the antibiotics are doing their job, I am back!

Immerhin hab ich in meiner Zwangspause gestrickt, was zum Glück fast in jeder Lebenslage geht. Ich habe phantastische Wolle auf den Nadeln. Die kupferne Farbe ist “Feentraum” aus reiner Maulbeerseide und wurde im Wollkenschloß handgefärbt. Ich wünschte, die Fotos würden auch nur annähernd zeigen, wie genial sie changiert. Es ist wirklich ein Märchentraum mit ihr zu stricken. Außerdem versuche ich mich zum ersten Mal an Mohair. Mensch, ist die ergiebig! Aber bis daraus das von der großzügigen Spenderin (huhu, Sandra!) bestellte Top wird, dauert es noch etwas. Ich muss mich noch einstricken.

But I´ve been knitting over the holidays, which luckily can be done in almost all predicaments. I have some amazing yarn on my needles. The copper coloured yarn is called “Feentraum”, fairy dream. It´s extremely luxurious: 100% mulberry silk that has been hand-dyed by a friend of mine. I wish the pictures would give you a better idea of its shimmer. It´s mesmerizing. – I am also giving mohair a try, for the first time! I cannot believe this, but 50 g might actually be sufficient for a summer top. Until I´ll have a design to present, it´s going to be some time though. I am still getting used to the yarn. It behaves very differently from the yarn I usually work with.

Außerdem habe ich eine Liste mit Neujahrsvorsätzen gemacht. Sie erinnert mich sehr an die vom letzten Jahr. Also war ich wohl nicht sehr erfolgreich. Aber ich gebe so schnell nicht auf. Insgesamt bin ich eigentlich sogar ganz zufrieden mit dem letzten Jahr. Ich habe regelmäßiger als früher Muster geschrieben, meine eigene Gruppe auf Ravelry gegründet und mit wunderbar talentierten deutschen Handfärberinnen zusammengearbeitet.

And I´ve made a list of New Year´s resolutions. It´s curiously similar to the list of last year. Which means that I have not been particularly successful. 😉 It doesn´t mean I´ll stop trying though. Plus, all in all, I am really happy with the last year. I have been designing more regularly than I used to, started my own group on Ravelry and been co-operating with some extremely talented German hand-dyers.

Für dies Jahr habe ich auch ein gutes Gefühl. Es ist viel geplant. Ich fange damit an, dass jede(r) StrickerIn, der/die sich bis Ende Januar für meinen Newsletter einträgt, einen Coupon-Code bekommt, mit dem er/sie sich eines meiner Muster auf Ravelry für umsonst herunterladen kann. Bisher sind schon eine Menge Abonnements zusammengekommen. Tausend Dank, euch allen! 🙂 Auch für eure lieben Kommentare und Nachrichten. Es ist schön, wenn das was man macht gefällt. Ich gebe zu, dass ein Teil von mir auch ein wenig eingeschüchtert ist und sich einfach zurückziehen und eigenbrödlerisch vor sich hin designen möchte. Andererseits wäre es einfach nicht halb so schön, ohne den Austausch mit euch. Vor allem ist es ja wohl der Sinn vom Musterschreiben, die Muster auch zu teilen. Also ist alles gut.
