Sssshhh, December mystery knitting

It is cold outside – the days are never shorter than during the Christmas season! – and it is extremely cosy inside. So how about spicing up the Advent season with a bit of mystery knitting on your super inviting couch? I am not revealing (much) more than in this mystery, we´ll be knitting a shawl. Like the one we made last year, only that it is very different. Ok, this is not very helpful, but it is going to be a mystery-kal, so I am supposed to be secretive about it. Lineares Mystery Shawl

Starting on October 8th, we will be knitting a comfy shawl together in my ravelry group Janukke Strickdesign.  It is going to be a mystery-KAL. I am telling you about it now so that you have a few days to organise and get your yarns and needles ready. If you need a little longer than that, it´s not a problem at all. The first clue isn´t elaborate, it will be easy to catch up if you join in a few days late.

The shawl will surprise you with its multi-directional knitting, resulting in a bold-looking construction, along with its interesting fibre study. You‘ll be working with yarns of two different weights. Or, if using the original ITO yarns, namely Wagami, Sensai and Tetsu, you will often work with yarns of two different qualities held together – a truly unique fabric is the result!

For those of you who hear the word “mystery” in the context of knitting for the first time: This means that you won´t know what the finished item will look like when you start knitting and will get the instructions bit by bit in a couple of clues.

Fall Mystery│Herbst-Mystery

Golden, glowing autumn is painting the world in vibrant colours all around us. Though the days may be shorter and the nights more nippy, autumn is also a signal to knitters that it’s time to pick up our needles once more and cast on cozy shawls, socks, and sweaters to wrap ourselves and our loved ones in warmth.

That is why on the 3rd of October, we’ll be starting off the knitting season with a mystery-KAL in my ravelry group.

We’ll be knitting a squishy, cozy shawl in Rosy Green Wool’s Cheeky Merino Joy (or a similar yarn in sport weight). It’ll be an easy knit and a cheerful addition to your favourite fall outfits, but the full design will only be revealed as you knit along with the clues! (All techniques will be explained in the clues.)

I will tell you this much: Texture is the hero in this design.

We’ll be working with four colours:
• Main colour: 320 m (350 yd)/100 g
• Contrast colour 1: 192 m (210 yd)/60 g
• Contrast colour 2: 256 m (280 yd)/80 g
• Contrast colour 3: 32 m (35 yd)/10 g

For the contrast colour 2 I suggest using a dark shade (or use the darkest of your light shades), and for contrast colour 3 use an accent colour. To give you some ideas, I have put together a few colour variations in clue 0, which is already available through ravelry.

Starting on October 3rd, a Saturday, the following four clues of the MKAL will be published every Friday morning, and the complete pattern will be available on November 7th.

During the KAL-period there the pattern is with a price of only 3.40 euros more than 20% cheaper than the regular price of 4.40 euros, for which the pattern will be available from November 7th on.

So schön der Herbst mit seinen goldenen und kraftvollen warmen Farben auch ist, draußen wird es kälter, nässer und dunkler. Aber wir stricken es uns gemütlich! Schönes und Wärmendes für die Schulter und die Seele gegen die nahende Winterkälte. Zusammen lassen wir hier unter Freunden die Nadeln klappern und machen es uns kuschelig.

Am 3. Oktober starten wir deswegen in meiner ravelry-Gruppe mit einem Mystery-KAL in die dunkle Jahreszeit.

Gestrickt wird ein wollig-weiches Tuch aus Rosy Green Wool, Cheeky Merino Joy oder einem vergleichbaren Garn in “Sport”-Stärke. So viel sei hier verraten: Bei dem Design spielt die Textur die Hauptrolle. Es ist ein einfach zu strickendes, flaches Tuch mit viel Effekt. Alle verwendeten Techniken werden in den Hinweisen erklärt.

Benötigt werden vier Farben:

Hauptfarbe: 320 m/100 g,

Kontrastfarbe 1:  192 m/60 g,

Kontrastfarbe 2: 256 m/80 g und

Kontrastfarbe 3: 32 m/10 g

Für die 2. Kontrastfarbe empfehle ich einen dunkleren Ton als für die anderen Farben, für die 3. Kontrastfarbe eine Akzentfarbe. Zur Inspiration habe ich im Hinweis 0 verschiedene Farbkombinationen für Euch zusammengestellt. Dein Hinweis 0 könnt ihr auf ravelry schon jetzt erstehen.

Am 3. Oktober wird der erste Hinweis veröffentlicht, die folgenden vier Hinweise gibt es dann immer freitagmorgens. Und am 7. November schließlich ist das komplette Muster erhältlich.

Wer die Anleitung zum KAL vor dem 3. Oktober kauft, zahlt einen Euro weniger als nach der Musterveröffentlichung. Ab dem 7. November ist die Anleitung dann zum regulären Tuchmusterpreis von 4,40 Euro zu erhalten.

Wer ist dabei? Ich freu mich sehr auf einen schönen gemeinsamen und strickreichen Herbst mit euch.

Es ist so weit: Das Geheimnis ist gelüftet, alle Muster der Sanddorn-Kollektion sind veröffentlicht. Danke euch allen für die euphorischen Kommentare und all die Herzen! Die Tücher sind wirklich auf viel positive Resonanz gestoßen – was mich natürlich riesig freut! – da ist es gut, dass für die Zeit vom 28. Februar, also heute, bis zum Ostermontag, dem 6. April, in meiner Ravelry-Gruppe ein KAL für alle fünf Tücher geplant ist. Wir werden zusammen die Nadeln schwingen und Spaß haben. Und es wird einige Gewinne geben. Schaut mal vorbei, wenn ihr mögt! Finally the mystery is solved, all patterns of the sea buckthorn collection are published. Thanks so much everyone for the euphoric comments and the lovely hearts! Since the five shawls got all that positive feedback, I am very happy that there will be a KAL in my Ravelry-group, starting today! It will last until Easter Monday, which is April 6th. Tsuru

Ich fange also gleich mal damit an, Euch zu erzählen, woran ich so arbeite: Gerade ist das Muster für das Dreiecktuch “Tsuru” fertig geworden, das wirklich ungewöhnlich schön fällt. Es ist das exquisiteste Tuch, das ich bisher gestrickt habe, so viel ist sicher. Das Ito Garn ist schon besonders. Ich habe immer zwei Qualitäten auf einmal verarbeitet, weil die Fäden sehr dünn sind. Dabei habe ich das flauschig-mohairige Ito-Sensai, das Ito-Urugami mit Papierkern und das Ito-Tetsu mit Metallanteil miteinander kombiniert. Es war ein Experiment mit Wollqualitäten. Ich war sehr fasziniert, wie die Kombination der verschiedenen Wollsorten die Eigenschaften vom Gestrick verändert hat. Das Ergebnis ist ein Tuch mit wirklich sehr besonderem Faltenwurf. Aber auch meine TeststrickerInnen, die nicht alle das Originalgarn verwendet haben, haben wunderschöne Tücher gestrickt. Schaut hier und lasst Euch inspirieren!

So I´ll start with telling you what I am working on: I´ve just released the Tsuru pattern, it´s a triangular shawl with an extraordinary drape. It´s the most luxurious shawl I have ever knit in my life, that´s for sure. The Ito yarn really is precious. I always held the strands of two qualities together, as the yarn is very thin. So I combined the fluffy Ito-Sensai mohair fibres, the Ito-Urugami paper core-fibres and the partly metallic Ito-Tetsu. It was a study in materials. I really enjoyed experimenting with the different yarn alliances and studying the new properties of the resulting fabric. It was a great experience.

My test knitters, even if not all of them used the original yarn, knit up beautiful shawls as well. Have a look at their projects and get inspired!

Meine Inspiration war das Origami, wohl zum Teil, weil das Garn aus Japan kommt und zum Teil, weil das Urugami einen Papierkern hat. Irgendwie fasziniert mich der Gedanke, Papier zu verstricken. Jedenfalls habe ich das Tuch nach der bekanntesten Figur des Origami benannt, dem Kranich. Das bedeutet “Tsuru” nämlich auf Deutsch: Kranich. Die klaren Linien in der Tuchkonstruktion sollen an die scharfen Kniffe der Papierkunst erinnern.

Also, schlagt schnell an und Ihr habt noch zwei Wochen Zeit bis zum großen Herbst-KAL, um mit dem Tuch fertig zu werden!

My inspiration was the Japanese art of origami, maybe partly because the Urugami with its paper content really got my imagination going, and partly, because the Ito yarn comes from Japan. So I named the shawl for the most well-known figure of the ancient craft, the crane. That´s what “Tsuru” means, crane. And the crisp geometric lines in the shawl construction are supposed to evoke the papercraft’s creases.

Was geht denn hier!?│What is this !?

Lange hab ich´s geplant, jetzt ist es so weit: Es gibt von mir einen ersten Mystery-KAL! Und zwar habe ich zwei Muster vorbereitet, eins für Anfänger und eins für Fortgeschrittene. Ihr findet Genaueres in meiner Ravelry-Gruppe und auf den beiden Patternseiten auf Ravelry (Tuch und Loop).

Ich bin schon extrem gespannt. Strickt im Moment überhaupt jemand? Immerhin haben wir Sommer. Deswegen habe ich zwei leichte Projekte ausgesucht, Ihr braucht für das Anfänger-geeignete Tuch Sockenwolle und für den etwas anspruchsvolleren Loop Lacewolle, beides in zwei verschiedenen Farben. Aber das wollte ich hier gar nicht alles noch einmal ausbreiten, Ihr könnt es ja unter den Links oben nachlesen.

Eins noch: Ich habe diesen Mystery mit zwei sehr talentierten Handfärberinnen organisiert. Ihr bekommt die benötigte Wolle im Kit bei Anja, der Frau der Wollträume, und die Lacewolle bei Bettina aus dem Wollkenschloss, sowie das Kontrastgarn für den Loop bei Lanade. Natürlich ist es auch möglich, die Wolle zu ersetzen. Aber wenn Ihr Euch etwas gönnen wollt, dann kann ich Euch die Wolle von beiden nur empfehlen. Die Farben sind kräftig und die Garne stricken sich wunderbar.

I´ve been secretively planning this for a long time, and now I can finally tell you: There will be a mystery KAL, featuring two of my designs! One of them can be knit by the adventurous beginner, and the other one has been written with the advanced knitter in mind. You will find all the details in my Ravelry group and on the pattern pages for the shawl and the loop.

This is really exciting. I hope that someone out there is knitting in summer, because what is a KAL without knitters? I chose two light-weight projects, the easier pattern is a shawl that is worked with fingering weight yarn, and the one that is a bit more challenging will use lace weight yarn, both in two colours. Before I tell you all those details again, I´ll stop and let you find the information under the links above.

One thing I want to mention is that I am organizing the KAL in cooperation with two German hand-dyers. You can get the yarn for the shawl from Anja, in her shop Wolltraeume, and the yarn for the loop from the castle-lady Bettina (Wollkenschloss) and Drops. Of course it´s possible to substitute the yarns. But if you are in the mood to treat yourself to something nice, I can highly recommend both of them. The colours are bright and rich, and the yarns are fun to knit up.

Tücher, Tücher, Tücher│Shawls, shawls, shawls

Pünktlich zu meinem Frühlings-KAL gibt es ein neues Muster von mir: Ein Tuch in Flügelform, das von der Mitte der geraden Kante zum Rand hin gestrickt wird. Ich finde diese Tuchform einfach nur super praktisch, sie drapiert sich wie von selbst um den Hals; man braucht nicht lange vor dem Spiegel zu stehen und zu zubbeln bis alles sitzt. Geformt wird das Tuch durch verkürzte Reihen. Und wenn euch das Muster jetzt irgendwie bekannt vorkommt, dann habt ihr gut aufgepaßt: Das Tuch ist die neue Variante von meinem alten Dreiecktuch, dem Septembermorgen. Daher auch sein völlig un-frühlingshafter Name: September-Flügel („September Wings“).

Just in time for the spring KAL in my Ravelry group I am publishing a new pattern: A wing-shaped shawl that is knit from the centre out to the contrast coloured edging. I like that particular shape for a shawl a lot, it drapes very naturally around the neck, no need to waste precious minutes in front of the mirror trying to make it look just right. The shape is achieved by short rows. And if you think `I kind of know this pattern from somewhere` that might be because you´ve been paying really close attention: The shawl is the new variant of my old pattern, the triangular shawl September Morning.  That is why its name is completely “un-spring-like”: September Wings.

Übrigens ist Wiebke, die für mich modelt, ganz schön tapfer. Wir haben die Bilder am kältesten Wochenende des Jahres direkt am Meer gemacht. Sie hat nur überlebt, weil wir uns immer drinnen in der Wohnung aufgewärmt haben und dann für kurze zwei Minuten rausgerannt sind, schnell posiert bzw. geknipst haben und dann wieder zurück ins Warme sind. Dafür bin ich mit den Bildern auch absolut zufrieden.

By the way, Wiebke, who´s modeling for me, is really brave. We took the pictures on the coldest day of this winter, right at the sea. The only reason she made it through alive is because we would warm up inside, then run outside and take pictures for two minutes or so and then immediately run back into the warmth. It´s been very worth it, I think. The pictures are just how I had hoped they´d turn out.

alte geschichten│old stuff

Ist der Februar wirklich schon mehr als zur Häfte rum? Ich kann´s nicht glauben, wie schnell die Zeit verfliegt. Ich habe ganz vergessen, euch zu erzählen dass ich ein paar alte Muster überarbeitet habe. Sie haben ein neues Layout bekommen und ich habe sie meinen neueren Standards angepaßt. Man bekommt ja mit der Zeit ein bischen Übung beim Musterschreiben.

Die Anleitung für die Eulenspiegel-Stulpen habe ich zum ersten Mal in einem pdf zusammengefaßt. Sie sind das allererste Muster, das ich je geschrieben habe. Ich hatte bisher nur auf meinem Blog über sie gesprochen. Aber jetzt habe ich sie auch bei Ravelry eingestellt, es ist einfach praktisch, um Projekte zu verlinken und zu gucken, was andere Strickerinnen so daraus machen. — Da fällt mir auf, dass ich also doch schon einmal mit Mohair gearbeitet habe. Es ist nur ziemlich lange her.

Is it the second half of February already? I cannot believe how time flies by. I almost forgot to tell you that I´ve been looking over some old patterns of mine, gave them a new layout and made them match my current standards for knitting patterns. `Cause, you know, one does get some practise over time.

And I´ve also for the first time written down the pattern for the Eulenspiegel cuffs in pdf format. They were the first pattern I ever wrote. Originally I had just talked about them on my old blog. Now I´ve also added them to the Ravelry pattern database, so that you can browse other projects. — Btw, I just realized that this means I have been working with mohair before. It´s just been a while. And it´s a totally different thing to use it in a garment.

Außerdem habe ich zwei alte Tutorials aufpoliert. Wenn ihr auf meinem alten Blog schon mitgelesen habt, erinnert ihr euch vielleicht an meine Maschenmarkierer aus Faden und meine Gedanken zum “richtigen” Wickeln eines Rundschals mit doppelter Verdrillung.

Und das Beste am Ganzen: alle Muster und Tutorials sind umsonst! Irgendwie muß ich ja schließlich mal Danke dafür sagen, dass ihr mein Design unterstützt und so absolut liebe Kommentare schreibt. 🙂 Ohne euch könnte ich lange nicht so viel Zeit mit Designen verbringen und der Spaß wäre auch irgendwie weg. Also, habt sehr viel Vergnügen mit den Mustern und Tutorials!
