heute zeige ich euch eine neue schnelle Idee, wie ihr mit Nadeln und Draht Schmuck herstellen könnt – meine Plättchen kennt ihr ja schon. Und zwar geht es darum, die Borromäischen Ringe zu stricken. Die Idee kam in der Woolly Thoughts Gruppe auf Ravelry auf. (Das ist übrigens ein geniales Forum, schade dass ich von Mathematik nur so wenig verstehe und oft nicht ganz mitkomme.) Jedenfalls fand ich den Gedanken klasse, und das hab ich draus gemacht:

Ich habe drei 6 Maschen starke und 43 cm lange I-Cords gestrickt. Genauer gesagt habe ich die I-Cords mit 5 Maschen gearbeitet und am Ende aus den Ziehfäden auf der Rückseite mit der Häkelnadel eine Masche hochgezogen. Für zwei von ihnen habe ich Silberdraht mit einem Durchmesser von 0,25 mm und für einen 0,25 mm starken Kupferdraht sowie jeweils Nadeln Nr. 2,5 verwendet. Die I-Cords habe ich dann zwischen Daumen und Zeigefinger gerollt, damit sie fest und rund wurden.

Dann habe ich die Ringe auf die Borromäische Art miteinander verschlungen (fragt nicht). Zum Glück hat Maghouin Beg (arthbach auf Ravelry) ein Muster dazu veröffentlicht. Die Bilder sprechen Bände, ihr braucht kein Englisch, um daraus schlau zu werden.

Dann habe ich nur noch den Verschluß angebracht und schon war die Kette fertig!

Wenn ihr mitgemacht habt, dann habt ihr nun eine wunderbare Kette, die eure Liebe zum Stricken auf ganz besondere Weise zum Ausdruck bringt. Ihr könnt sie sogar zweimal gewickelt um´s Handgelenk tragen. Sehr praktisch, wie ich finde.

here´s another quick idea – after my Platelets pattern – to make some jewellery with your knitting needles: Make your own borromean rings! The idea came up in the Woolly Thoughts group (great group btw, way above my head but very educational and fun) on Ravelry. I really liked it, and this is what I came up with:

I knit up three 6-stitch wide I-cords that are 43 cm long. Actually I found that, as with wire the stitch tension isn´t as easy to adjust as with yarn, it´s easier to work 5-stitch I-cords and then, with a crochet hook, pick up an extra stitch from the strands on the wrong side. I used 2.5 mm double pointed needles and 0.25 mm silver wire for two of them and 0.25 mm copper wire for the third I-cord for some extra interest. Then I rolled the cords in between my thumb and index fingers to make them more dense.

Next I interwove the three rings in the Borromean way – don´t ask, I won´t know. Luckily Maghouin Beg (arthbach) wrote a great explanation for this.

Finally I attached a closure.

Done! If you´ve worked along with me you´ve now your own beautiful mathematically correct necklace that secretly celebrates your love for knitting. You can even wind it two times around your wrist and make a bracelet out of it. I like this flexibility and have been wearing it a lot already.

plättchen │platelets

Es ist schon eine Weile her, dass mir die Idee gekommen ist, Schmuck zu stricken. Wie ich seitdem herausgefunden habe, bin ich lange nicht die erste, die das macht. Eine sehr empfehlenswerte Seite zu dem Thema ist zum Beispiel die von Joyce Goodman. Ihre Werke sind einfach nur schön. Viele Muster gibt es für gestrickten Schmuck allerdings noch nicht.

Eine ganz andere und jahrhundertealte Art Schmuck, bzw. Ketten zu stricken stellt die Technik vom Viking Knitting dar. Aber ich wollte Draht einfach wie Wolle verstricken.

Ich habe mit diesem ersten Versuch eines Armbands angefangen:

It was a while ago that I have had the idea to knit jewellery. And as I have discovered since, I am not the first one to think about that. For example, Joyce Goodman´s website is a great resource for this topic. And her pieces are stunning. But all in all there aren´t too many patterns for knitting jewellery out there yet.

I started exploring the new material with this attempt of a bracelet:

Das Armband sieht zwar schon so ziemlich genau so aus, wie ich es mir vorgestellt habe, aber der Nachteil ist, dass man es über die Hand streifen muss, um es zu tragen. Und da Draht natürlich nicht elastisch ist, sitzt es einigermaßen locker. Die Lösung ist ein Verschluss. Eine Verlängerungskette am anderen Ende macht die Weite flexibel.

Dünner 0,2 mm dicker Draht wie ich ihn für das Armband oben verwendet habe, strickt sich kaum anders als Wolle, eben ein bischen sperriger. Wird dickerer Draht verwendet, entsteht härterer Schmuck. Das dickste, was ich versucht habe, war Draht mit einem Durchmesser von 0,4 mm zu verstricken. Dann muss man jeder Masche mit einer Häkelnadel einzeln auf die Nadel helfen. Aber das Ergebnis lohnt die Mühe! Der Schmuck wirkt fast professionell und man hat ein Leben lang Freude daran.

The bracelet looks almost as I had envisioned. But it will have to pass your knuckles if you want to wear it. And as wire isn´t stretchy at all, it is a rather loose fit.

The solution is a clasp closure. A chain at the other end let´s the wearer decide which width is most comfortable.

32-gauge wire, as I have used for the bracelet in the image above, can be knit the same way as yarn. The only difference is that it´s a bit harder. If you use thicker wire, you will end up with much sturdier jewellery. The thickest wire I used was 26-gauge wire. I had to help every single stitch onto the needle using a crochet hook. The result is very worth it, though! The jewellery looks professionell and will last forever.

Das Armband unten im Bild ist mit solchem dicken Draht gestrickt. Da der Draht nicht so dehnbar ist und sich damit nicht so in die Breite ziehne läßt wie der dünnere, entstehen schmalere Plättchen.

The bracelet in the picture below has been worked with such a thick wire. As it is not as malleable as the thinner one, you cannot stretch the platelets to form circles, and thus the bracelet has thinner platelets than the bracelet shown above.

Aus nur einem Plättchen entstehen Ohrringe (von links nach rechts mit Draht vom Durchmesser 0,4 mm, 0,3 mm und 0,2  mm gestrickt).

If you work only one platelet, you´ll get lovely earrings. The gauge is – seen from left to right – 26, 28 and 32.

Übrigens ist das echtes Sterling Silver, also 925/1000er Silber. – Ja, man kann Silber wirklich verstricken! Ich habe meins hier bestellt. Es ist sogar Allergiker-geeignet, da es ausser Silber nur noch Kupfer, aber kein Nickel enthält.

Und weil sich der Schmuck so wunderbar als Geschenk eignet und ich schon ein bischen in vorweihnachtlicher Stimmung bin, habe ich beschlossen, den Schmuck am ersten Tag für umsonst anzubieten!
