Now you can already put to use the information of the last post: My new shawl pattern, Verum, invites you to pick three colours that then get distributed over a pattern of stripes and short row segments. Verum makes this easy for you, so long as the three colours go well together, nothing can go wrong in this shawl. It doesn´t matter where you place the accent colour or which palette you go for.

The pattern asks for fingering weight yarn, preferably Frida Fuchs REMMIDEMMI Sock. In my sample I combined Vanilleschote (black), Kieselerde (grey) and Olive (green). Jana from Frida Fuchs put together that combination and I fell in love with it the minute I opened the package that came with the mail. She has a sixth sense for colour, which shows clearly in the palette of her yarns. – By the way, her shop is freshly stocked up, as of 6 pm yesterday, CET.

 

 

But back to this colour combination: I like to have two colours that are similar, or fall into one category, and one colour that is the odd one out. So grey and black are the pair in this example, and the green (Olive) is the colour that is creating a vibrant and cheerful accent. As I mentioned, in this shawl any of the three colours could be the accent colour, the pattern is well-balanced enough.

The projects of noone else but Jana from Frida Fuchs herself and my talented test knitters will provide some inspiration for you to get your creative juices flowing:

 

Jana made a sample in Hanami (speckled creme), Rosmarinheide (rose) and Kieselerde (grey). So the same concept as before works for a muted palette as well. In these colours the unisex shawl is soft and very femine.

 

Heike chose soft colours also but added in a darker shade for extra depth.

 

Elisa and Susi went with shades of blue, which is always a safe pick.

 

Tracy had the same thought but added in a mustard shade for accent. And look at that tassle, isn´t it fantastic?

 

And Tanya combined a moss green with a warm pink-red and a creme shade to great effect.

 

This shot was clearly photo-bombed. But we don´t get distracted from Ramona´s perfect choice in colours: Mustard, fir green and steel blue are an unexpectedly great match with a back-to-nature feel to it. Maybe that´s because Ramona hand-dyed the colours herself, using plant pigments.

Greydient

There is something special about grey accessories and garments. They need to appeal through texture and construction alone, not being able to add a colour highlight here or there, or to catch the eye by a particularly bold or gorgeous shade. This constraint by design makes them often look very stylish. So I was thrilled when Geilsk agreed to send four balls of their beautiful Bomuld og Uld for me to play with, all in a different shade of grey. And Greydient is what came out of my experiments.

Light slip stitch stripes add a bit of texture and break up the stocking stitch background of stripes in darker shades of grey in this semi-circular shawl. At the same time, eyelets set an accent in the stocking stitch stripes and make the shawl deeper by adding an extra stitch each. You will need less than one of each of the four skeins to make the shawlette. And of course you are not restricted to greys at all! I cannot wait to find out what colour choices knitters worldwide will make. Some gorgeous shawls already came about in the test knit. – And what will your Greydient look like?

Graue Accessoires und Kleidungsstücke haben etwas Besonderes. Sie müssen allein durch Textur und Konstruktion wirken, ohne dass sie hier oder da einen Farbakzent setzen oder das Auge durch eine besonders ansprechende Farbe beglücken könnten. Diese prinzipielle Zurückgenommenheit lässt sie oft sehr elegant wirken. Ich war also mehr als glücklich, als Geilsk zugestimmt hat, mir vier Knäuel ihrer wunderschönen Bomuld og Uld in verschiedenen Grauschattierungen zu schicken, um damit zu spielen. Das Ergebnis meiner Nadelexperimente ist Greydient.

Helle Hebemaschenstreifen setzen die glatt rechts gestrickten Streifen im Hintergrund optisch und strukturell gegeneinander ab. Löcher akzentuieren die dunkleren glatt rechten Streifen geben dem Tuch Tiefe, indem mit jedem von ihnen eine Masche zugenommen wird. Für das kleine Tuch braucht man nicht mehr als vier Knäuel Bomuld og Uld bzw. 200 g Sockenwolle. Und natürlich gibt es keine Verpflichtung, in Grau zu arbeiten! Ich bin sehr gespannt auf die bunten Interpretationen der Strickwelt, die durch das Netz so unwahrscheinlich nah rückt. Meine Testerinnen haben schon wunderschöne Tücher ernadelt. – Und wie wird dein Greydient aussehen?

Kouki-Hearts

 

The Christmas season is the time of expressing your love for the people close to you, the time to surprise them with a special present, and to show your affection by spending time with your loved ones. So what better occasion could there be to cast on this shawl, Kouki-Hearts? (Except for Valentine´s maybe. I might have to do a relaunch of the pattern on Valentine´s Day.)

An subtle pattern of knit and purl stitches embosses the fabric of this special shawl with hearts, while the colourful stripes add more overt visual interest. The narrow triangular shape creates a cosy accessory. Using a yarn with some lustre, like Ito Kouki (ramie and silk), allows the light to showcase the hearts. Ito Kouki does this in a way I haven´t seen before in any other yarn. Treat yourself to something special and make an Ito purchase – you will be sure to enjoy it! – or do what my test knitters did and find other shiny yarns to make this shawl even more unique. I hope knitting this shawl gives you as much joy as it gave me.

 

 

Die Weihnachtszeit ist die Zeit, in der wir unsere Zuneigung und Liebe für die Menschen, die uns am nächsten sind ausdrücken – mit einem besonderen Geschenk und der Zeit, die wir mit ihnen verbringen. Was für einen besseren Moment als genau diesen jetzt könnte es also geben, um dies “herzige” Tuch anzuschlagen? (Außer vielleicht den Valentinstag, ich sollte das Muster zu Valentin neu herausbringen.)

Das dreieckige Tuch wird von der Spitze zur längsten Seite hin gearbeitet. Ein subtiles Herzmuster aus rechten und linken Maschen sowie farbige Streifen geben ihm das gewisse Extra. Gestrickt wird mit Ito Kouki, ein Traum aus Ramie, einer Pflanzenfaser, die seidenähnliche Eigenschaften hat, und Spinnenseide. Ein Traum aus glänzenden Fasern, wie ich sie noch nicht erlebt habe! Ein wirkliches Strickerlebnis und ein wunderschönes Tuch für den besonderen Anlass. Viel Spaß beim Stricken von Kouki-Hearts!

 

Advent calendar

This December ist going to be very busy at janukke headquarters: We will be knitting a Christmas-sy shawl in a festive check pattern together and enjoy our very own creative Advent calender. There will be many prize drawings! Maybe even one a day, depending on how many contributors there will be. The prizes still keep coming in, so I am not sure.

The shawl has already been cast-on, we started the mystery-KAL last Saturday. But don´t worry about that, if you still would like to join in, you can do that at any time. Back to the shawl. We will be knitting with yarn in three colours somewhere in the range of fingering to sport. In the original shawl I have been working with 2 lace weight Ito fibres held together. If you are in the mood to treat yourself to something special, I can very much recommend the Ito yarn. It makes for a sumptuous piece of knitting, a shawl that will last you for years to come and brighten your day every time you are wearing it.

Diesen Dezember geht es hier im Janukke-Hauptquartier wirklich rund: Wir stricken zusammen ein weihnachtliches Tuch in festlichem Karo und organisieren unseren eigenen kreativen Adventskalender mit vielen Gewinnen.

Hoku

I really haven´t been blogging much this year, have I? There´s so much to talk about – there just never seems to be enough time for everything.

My last fall pattern has just been released. It´s a pattern for a shawl featuring elements like stripes and dots, silk and merino, lace and dk weights named Hoku. It’s perfect for using up those odd skeins in your stash. The beginner-friendly design looks more complicated than it is, and uses a simple blister stitch to produce the dots. Combining contrasting yarns, such as the soft and squishy Malabrigo Rastita with shimmering silk Ito Kinu, creates the most powerful visual effect. I really hope you like it and will knit many Hokus!

Dies Jahr habe ich wirklich nicht besonders viel gebloggt. Obwohl es wirklich viel zu sagen gibt, scheint nie genug Zeit zu bleiben darüber zu schreiben.

Jetzt ist gerade mein letztes Herbstmuster ist veröffentlicht: Hoku kombiniert kontrastierende Elemente wie Streifen und Punkte sowie glänzendes Lacegarn und kuscheligere Wolle zu einer harmonischen Gesamtkomposition. So eignet sich das Tuch als Projekt für zwei einzelne Knäuel aus dem eigenen Wollvorrat, die man sonst vielleicht nicht zusammen verstrickt hätte. Die Punkte sind viel leichter zu stricken als es auf den ersten Blick wirkt, auch Anfänger sollten keine Probleme mit dem Fototutorial zum Stich haben. Ich hoffe euch gefällt das Tuch und ihr strickt eine Menge Hokus!

Ganz im Gegensatz │in the opposite

Die Idee für dieses Design habe ich schon seit Ewigkeiten im Kopf. Es sollte ein Tuch mit klaren Gegensätzen werden, bei dem ein helles und ein dunkles Grau das Prinzip von Yin und Yang verkörpern. Und ich finde das ist mir auch gelungen. Es gibt ein Gleichgewicht der beiden Schattierungen, die sich in der Mitte überlagern. Ich kann mir das Tuch in vielen verschiedenen Farben vorstellen. Vielleicht in Komplementärfarben? Das würde die Idee von Gegensätzen unterstreichen. Oder auch ein heller und ein dunkler Ton derselben Farbe würden sich wirklich sehr gut machen.

Die Konstruktion funktioniert über verkürzte Reihen. Je ein Knäuel einer Farbe befindet sich auf einer anderen Seite des Tuches. Die dunkle Seite fängt immer links an und arbeitet sich nach rechts über die Mitte hinaus in Richtung helle Seite und die helle Seite beginnt auf der rechten Seite und überkreuzt sich nach links in der Mitte mit der dunklen Farbe. Das ist schon das ganze Geheimnis. Weil diese Art ein Tuch zu stricken doch etwas ungewöhnlich ist, führt ein Fototutorial im Muster durch die ersten Reihen, bis das Prinzip etabliert ist.

Ich habe mit Geilsk bomuld og uld gearbeitet. Es ist ein Garn, das sich wirklich traumhaft verstrickt. Ich mag das Gefühl, wie es über die Finger gleitet. Das Muster und noch mehr Informationen findet ihr hier.

The idea for this design has been on my mind for quite a while. It was supposed to become a shawl with distinct opposites, in which a light and a dark grey would embody the concept of yin and yang. And I think it has worked. There´s a very satisfying balance between the two opposing colours that overlap at the centre.

I can imagine this shawl in many different colours. You can get as wild or toned-down as you like. How about complementary colours for a stark contrast? Or are you leaning towards colours that blend into one another very well? If the latter you could choose two shades of the same colour. Anything goes, really.

The construction works through short rows. The two colours are kept at opposing sides of the shawl and overlap at the centre. The darker shade starts on the left and crosses the lighter shade in the centre, while the lighter shade starts on the right and then crosses the darker shade in the centre from the other side. That´s the complete secret. Because this way to work a shawl is a tad bit unusual, photos in the pattern will guide you through the first rows until the construction is established.

I´ve been working with Geilsk bomuld og uld again. It´s a yarn that´s simply gorgeous to work with. I love the feeling of the yarn running through my fingers when I am knitting.

Nebelschleier über dem Meer│Mist over the sea

Mein neues Design erinnert mich an das hier:

When I am thinking of my new shawl design, I am thinking of this:

Nebel über dem Meer. So sieht die See jetzt, wo es etwas wärmer geworden ist, allerdings nicht mehr aus. Das ist aber kein Problem, in anderen Farben gestrickt, evoziert das Tuch ganz andere Assoziationen. Wovon rede ich eigentlich? Von genau diesem Tuch:

Mist over the sea. It is not how the sea is looking right now anymore, since the temperatures are rising, I am aware of that. No problem for you though, as you can knit the shawl in any colour you like and make it more season appropriate. So what am I talking about? It´s this shawl:

 

Für mich wird das Tuch aber immer der “Nordseenebel “bleiben. Teststricker haben ihre Projekte schon “Nebelschleier” getauft, was wegen dem “Schleiermuster”, in dem das Tuch gearbeitet wird, ziemlich clever ist. Das Nebelhafte wird noch durch die zarte Textur der Ito-Garne Sensai, ein Mohair-Seidengemisch, und Urugami aus Papier- und Wollfasern unterstrichen.

Das Schaltuch besteht aus zwei sichelförmigen Hälften. Sie werden vom Mittelpunkt der Längsachse aus nach außen gestrickt. Für die erste Hälfte werden am Ende jeder Reihe jedes Mal einige Maschen hinzugefügt. Die zweite Hälfte wird gegengleich, aber diesmal mit verkürzten Reihen, geformt. Es ist bei diesem Tuch besonders wichtig, das passende Garn zu finden. Eine Maschenprobe ist unbedingt notwendig um sicherzustellen, dass die Wolle zum offenen Schleiermuster passt und dass die richtige Nadelstärke gewählt wurde. Besonders gut geeignet sind flauschige Fasern wie Mohair, Alpaka und Kaschmir. Das Muster gibt es wie gewohnt auf Ravelry.

Ich hoffe, euch macht das Stricken genausoviel Freude wie mir. Tatsächlich hatte ich eine so gute Zeit, dass ich gleich noch ein Tuch mit ähnlicher Konstruktion entworfen habe. Mehr davon die nächsten Tage!

For me, this shawl will always be linked to that image of the North Sea Mist though. An association that is evoked in both the colour and the sensual texture of Ito Sensai’s mohair-silk and Urugami’s wool-paper yarns.

The shawl is knit in two halves that radiate from the centre of the shawl out along the long axis. Formed by first adding stitches, then using short rows, the increases create a subtly curved crescent moon for each half. The veil stitch pattern produces a light and open fabric. Choosing the right yarn is crucial, so be sure to swatch to test which yarn and needle size works best to create the openness of the fabric when you give the pattern a go. The pattern is available on Ravelry now.

I hope you´ll enjoy knitting this shawl. I had such a great time that I made another one using a very similar aproach to shaping. Coming up!

Neu!│New!

Zum Jahreswechsel denke ich gern zwölf Monate zurück. Was war gut, was möchte ich verbessern? Das letzte Jahr stand definitiv unter dem Zeichen “alles Neu”. Nicht dass ich Altes besonders geändert hätte, aber es gab einen ersten janukke-Mystery, ich war auf meiner ersten Wollmesse und meinem ersten Raveller-Treffen, habe meinen ersten Workshop gegeben und zum ersten Mal in meiner Gruppe einen Adventskalender gestaltet. Besonders Letzteres ist noch ganz frisch in meinem Kopf und hat mir riesig Spaß gemacht. Diese Explosion an Kreativität in meiner Strickgruppe hat mich richtig umgehauen. Es gab Rezepte, Bastelanleitungen, Gedichte, Geschichten, Lustiges, Nachdenkliches, einfach eine bunte Mischung. Und natürlich auch viele Gewinne. Schenken gehört einfach in die Weihnachtszeit.

Ich habe eine Menge positive Rückmeldungen für den Kalender bekommen (und das Lob geht an alle, die eines der wunderschönen Türchen gestaltet oder einen Preis gespendet haben), weswegen es dies Jahr wieder einen geben wird. Und auch die anderen Dinge möchte ich gerne wiederholen. Mit dem Raveller-Treffen ist es noch nicht sicher, weil es für mich eine wirklich lange Anreise nach Regensburg ist, aber alles andere sollte drin sein.

Dann gab es noch die allererste janukke-Spendenaktion. Von jedem bis zum 31. Dezember verkauften Muster von “See the Rhythm” gehen 1,50 Euro an Ärzte ohne Grenzen. Insgesamt sind stolze 225 Euro zusammengekommen!

Nicht neu sind dies Jahr meine Preise für die Muster. Vielleicht habt Ihr es schon gehört, ab dem 1. Januar gelten neue Umsatzsteuersätze in Europa. Genauer gesagt, die Steuern müssen jetzt europaweit dort gezahlt werden, wo der Kunde sitzt. Dadurch fällt die bisher in Deutschland geltende Kleinunternehmer-Regelung weg, nach der man erst Umsatzsteuer zahlt, wenn man mehr als einen bestimmten Betrag verdient. Ich habe beschlossen, erst einmal abzuwarten und dann, falls es notwendig ist, zum nächsten Quartal hin meine Preise leicht anzuheben.

At the turn of the year I like to think back twelve months. What was good, what would I like to improve? Last year definitely was the year of new things. I organised my first mystery-KAL, was at my first wool trade show, gave my first workshop and for the first time put together an Advent calendar in my knitting group. Especially the calendar is still fresh in my mind. It was great fun. This explosion of creativity blew me away. Knitters sent in recepies for delicious food, poems, stories, funny and philosophical stuff, simply a colourful mix. And of course, in the spirit of the season, there were many prizes. 

I got a lot of positive feedback for the calendar (and this goes to everyone who contributed), so there will be another one next year. And all the other things will hopefully be repeated this year. Just the Raveller meeting is not certain, it´s a long drive to Regensburg.

Then there was the first janukke-charity. For every copy of “See the Rhythm” that sold until Decembre 31st, 1.50 Euros are donated to Doctors Without Borders. We collected a whooping 225 Euros!!

Totally not new are my prices for the knitting patterns. You might have heard that there are new VAT laws in Europe, starting on January 1st. Sellers now are mandated to pay taxes in the country where the buyer is located. Since there are no thresholds as with the old law, this will probably mean that I will have to augment my prices eventuelly. For now everything will remain the same though.

wenn fische fliegen│when fish are flying off

Heute schicke ich meine lange gehegten und gepflegten Fliegenden Fische auf den Weg, bzw. den Flug, in die weite Welt hinaus. Ich fühle mich wirklich ein wenig wie eine Fisch-Mama, die ihre Kleinen großgezogen hat und jetzt am großen Tag etwas nervös ist. Aber die Strickwelt ist ja nicht der ungemütlichste aller Plätze. Ich hoffe, sie werden viel genadelt, Escher muss einfach gesehen und getragen werden.

Mal wieder war es ein Vergnügen, die Skizze in Maschen zu übersetzen. Es ist die Grafik Nummer 73, wie ihr wahrscheinlich schon über den Link in meinem letzten Post erfahren habt. Diesmal war es etwas anders als sonst, zum ersten Mal habe ich nur mit Farben und nicht mit Textur gearbeitet. Ich bin richtig erstaunt, wie sehr mir das Ergebnis gefällt. Sogar das Stricken hat Spaß gemacht. Ich arbeite sehr selten mit Fair Isle und es ist meine erste Begegnung mit der Doppelstricktechnik, es war also einfach Glück. Auch die Merino Wolle von Rosy Green Wool war eine gute Wahl, da kratzt nix am Hals, man kann sich gemütlich einkuscheln. Der Winter kann kommen!

Today is the day! The Flying Fish are honouring their name and are flying off. I feel a bit like a fish mom that has cared for the little ones for the last few months, and now is a bit nervous on the big day. At least I guess that´s how a fish mom feels. Anyway, I hope that many, many knitters will make their own Flying Fish loops, Escher just needs to be seen and worn!

Once again I had a blast translating the sketch into stitches. It´s sketch number 73, as you might know from my last blogpost. This time it´s been different, I have been working with colours only, and totally ignoring texture. I am actually surprised how much I like the result. Even the knitting was fun. I don´t do a lot of fair isle and it was the first time of double knitting for me, so I really got lucky. The organic merino yarn from Rosy Green Wool was a good choice, it´s super comfy and warm around the neck. I am prepared for the colder season.

Tsuru

Ich fange also gleich mal damit an, Euch zu erzählen, woran ich so arbeite: Gerade ist das Muster für das Dreiecktuch “Tsuru” fertig geworden, das wirklich ungewöhnlich schön fällt. Es ist das exquisiteste Tuch, das ich bisher gestrickt habe, so viel ist sicher. Das Ito Garn ist schon besonders. Ich habe immer zwei Qualitäten auf einmal verarbeitet, weil die Fäden sehr dünn sind. Dabei habe ich das flauschig-mohairige Ito-Sensai, das Ito-Urugami mit Papierkern und das Ito-Tetsu mit Metallanteil miteinander kombiniert. Es war ein Experiment mit Wollqualitäten. Ich war sehr fasziniert, wie die Kombination der verschiedenen Wollsorten die Eigenschaften vom Gestrick verändert hat. Das Ergebnis ist ein Tuch mit wirklich sehr besonderem Faltenwurf. Aber auch meine TeststrickerInnen, die nicht alle das Originalgarn verwendet haben, haben wunderschöne Tücher gestrickt. Schaut hier und lasst Euch inspirieren!

So I´ll start with telling you what I am working on: I´ve just released the Tsuru pattern, it´s a triangular shawl with an extraordinary drape. It´s the most luxurious shawl I have ever knit in my life, that´s for sure. The Ito yarn really is precious. I always held the strands of two qualities together, as the yarn is very thin. So I combined the fluffy Ito-Sensai mohair fibres, the Ito-Urugami paper core-fibres and the partly metallic Ito-Tetsu. It was a study in materials. I really enjoyed experimenting with the different yarn alliances and studying the new properties of the resulting fabric. It was a great experience.

My test knitters, even if not all of them used the original yarn, knit up beautiful shawls as well. Have a look at their projects and get inspired!

Meine Inspiration war das Origami, wohl zum Teil, weil das Garn aus Japan kommt und zum Teil, weil das Urugami einen Papierkern hat. Irgendwie fasziniert mich der Gedanke, Papier zu verstricken. Jedenfalls habe ich das Tuch nach der bekanntesten Figur des Origami benannt, dem Kranich. Das bedeutet “Tsuru” nämlich auf Deutsch: Kranich. Die klaren Linien in der Tuchkonstruktion sollen an die scharfen Kniffe der Papierkunst erinnern.

Also, schlagt schnell an und Ihr habt noch zwei Wochen Zeit bis zum großen Herbst-KAL, um mit dem Tuch fertig zu werden!

My inspiration was the Japanese art of origami, maybe partly because the Urugami with its paper content really got my imagination going, and partly, because the Ito yarn comes from Japan. So I named the shawl for the most well-known figure of the ancient craft, the crane. That´s what “Tsuru” means, crane. And the crisp geometric lines in the shawl construction are supposed to evoke the papercraft’s creases.
