Als ich dieses herrlich goldene Garn von Shibui zum ersten Mal gesehen habe, hatte ich direkt eine vage Idee von einer kleinen, vom Jugendstil inspirierten Strick-Kollektion. Beim Designen habe ich an die Frauen in den Bildern des tschechischen Malers Alfons Maria Mucha gedacht und mir vorgestellt, was sie wohl im Winter tragen würden. Daher auch der Name Muk. Für “Mucha”, und zwar so verändert, um es der englisch-sprechenden Zunge nicht zu schwer zu machen. 😉

When I first saw a skein of this beautiful shining golden Shibui yarn, I had a vague idea of a small Art Nouveau inspired knitwear series. And so I designed the Muk (pronounced “mook”) accessory set while pondering what the women in the pictures by a Czech painter of the epoch, Alphonse Mucha, would wear in winter. Muk is for Mucha. Get it? 😉

Mucha hat einen verspielten, romantischen Stil mit vielen klaren und zarten Linien, wie sie für den Jugendstil typisch sind.

Mucha has a playful, delicate style, with a lot of clear-cut lines, as are typical for the Art Nouveau.

Das war also meine Vorgabe für das Muk-Set. Und führt Anja im Bild oben rechts nicht die ultimative Mucha-Pose vor?

So that is what I went for in the Muk set. And isn´t Anja demonstrating the ultimate Mucha-pose in the close-up of her head?

Das Set besteht aus Schal, Mütze und Pulswärmern. Auf Ravelry finden sich alle Angaben zum Wollverbrauch, zur Maschenprobe und andere wichtige Informationen sowie mehr Bilder und natürlich das Muster selbst. (Man braucht kein Mitglied zu sein, um die Seite sehen zu können.) Und bis zum 6. Januar gibt es 20 % Festagsrabatt!

The set contains a scarf, a hat and cuffs. There will be plenty of information on the yardage, gauge and other technical information, as well as more pictures and the pattern itself on Ravelry (no worries, you do not have a member to see all that). Ich bin super glücklich mit der Wolle, die ich ausgesucht habe, Shibui staccato. Die Farbe nennt sich “flaxen”, also flachsfarben. Im richtigen Licht schimmert sie fast golden. Der Schimmer geht natürlich auf den Seidenanteil von dreißig Prozent zurück. Die Wolle an sich ist weich und fluffig. Probiert sie unbedingt mal aus, wenn ihr noch nie mit ihr gestrickt habt!

And I am more than happy with the yarn I used, Shibui staccato. The colourway is named “flaxen”. In the right light it shines almost golden; the shine, of course, is partly due to the rather high silk content of thirty per cent. The yarn really is lovely to work with. It is soft and squishy and has a great stitch definition. I highly recommend to try it out!

Das Muster oben im Bild ist das Falzmuster (englisch “welting pattern”). Wie der Name sagt, besteht es aus Falzen beziehungsweise gewellten Querrippen. Die Falzungen im Gestrick entstehen dadurch, dass jede zweite Masche über drei oder mehr Reihen abgehoben wird. Dann folgt wieder eine Reihe rechte Maschen. Man sieht sie im Bild nicht, weil es die Rückseite zeigt. Dort bilden die abgehobenen Maschen ein Karomuster, das ich sehr effektvoll finde. Es ist das Muster für das Set. Aber dass ich die Rückseite von einem Muster verwende, bedeutet auch, dass man den Beanie auch auf links gedreht tragen kann. Leider habe ich vergessen, davon ein Foto zu machen. Und ich habe das Set schon an Anja verschenkt. Die Maschenprobe ist längst aufgeribbelt. Ihr müsst also mein Wort dafür nehmen, dass es so ist.

The stitch pattern in the image above is the welting pattern. As the name says, it produces a welted fabric. This is achieved by slipping every second stitch for a number of rows. I used the wrong side as right side as I like the checked effect of the slipped stitches a lot. This also means that the hat can be worn inside out for a welted look. Sadly I forgot to take pictures of that and now I have already given away the accessories to Anja. I even unraveled my swatch to make the most of the yarn I had and don´t have that either to take a picture of. So please take my word for it, and have a great time knitting your own Mucha-style accessories!

Weihnachtsdeko│christmas ornaments

Ich wollte dies Jahr gerne neue Ornamente für den Weihnachtsbaum basteln. Und da nicht mehr viel Zeit ist, habe ich überlegt, was man mit wenig Aufwand und gleichzeitig möglichst viel Effekt herstellen könnte. Wollig sollte es auch sein. Da kam mir die Idee von gehäkelten Herzen.

Und so hab ich´s gemacht: Ich habe mit weißem Häkelgarn eine ca. fünfzehn Zentimeter lange Luftmaschenkette gehäkelt. Die Luftmaschenkette habe ich mit einer Kettmasche zum Kreis geschlossen und beide Fadenenden vernäht. Als nächstes habe ich den Kreis auf einem Küchenbrett als Unterlage zum Herz geformt. Die Herzform habe ich mit Zuckerwasser übergossen. Dadurch  wird sie fest. Alternativ eignet sich Haarspray oder Stoffhärter. Die Herzen haben zwei Tage zum Trocknen gebraucht. Wer es eilig hat, kann mit einem Fön nachhelfen oder die Herzen auf die Heizung oder vor einen Kamin (die Romantik!) legen. Dann habe ich die Herzen mit Perlen und Goldfaden verziert und eine Schlaufe zum Aufhängen angebracht.

Natürlich kann man auch andere Formen herstellen und die Ornamente mit allem Verzieren, was der Fundus hergibt.

This year I wanted new self-made ornaments for the Christmas tree. And as I don´t have much time left, I needed something quick. And, of course, it had to be woolly too. I thought about it for a while and came up with the idea to make some crocheted hearts.

And this is how I made them: I crocheted some chain stitches with a standard white crocheting thread and a matching crochet hook until I had a chain of fifteen centimetres. I closed it to a circle with a slipped stitch. Then I sew in the ends. Next, I put the circles on a flat surface, I used a chopping board from the kitchen, and gave them the heart shape I wanted them to have. Then I hardened it with sugar water. There are liquid fabric stiffeners you can use instead. The hearts took two days to dry. If you´d like to speed things up a bit, you could use a hair dryer or put the hearts on top of a heater or in front of a fireplace.

Next, I embellished the hearts with a golden thread and some pearls.

Of course you can make other shapes as well and decorate your ornaments with everything you like.

schafgarbenlace│yarrow lace

Lace stricke ich nicht sehr viel. Die Gemma F. ist bisher mein einziges Projekt. Aber es fasziniert mich schon seit langem. Besonders die inspirierten und immer von beiden Seiten gut aussehenden Muster von Anne Lorenz-Panzer alias Arene´s Lace finde ich wunderschön. Und diesen Sommer habe ich mich intensiv mit dem gezielten Stricken von Löchern beschäftigt. Wäre es nicht toll, einen Schmetterling in Lace einzufangen? Oder eine Doppelhelix zu stricken? – An beidem bin ich gescheitert. Mein Schmetterling wurde gardinenhaft und die Doppelhelix wollte einfach nicht von Vorder- und Rückseite her gleich schön aussehen. Und dass Anne dieses Projekt bei Ravelry eingestellt hat, hat mich komplett überzeugt: meine Helix war nix (haha, das klingt fast wie der Anfang für einen Rap-Song). Da kann ich einfach nicht mithalten – auch wenn ihre Variante gehäkelt ist. Trotzdem.

Gerade wollte ich aufgeben, da ist einfach so passiert. Wie von selbst hat sich das Gestricks zu einem Lied aus Maschen gefügt.

Erinnert das Muster nicht irgendwie an die Blütenstände von Schafgarben?

I do not knit a lot of lace. The Gemma F. is my only project so far. But I have been fascinated by it for a very long time. Especially the inspired and reversible patterns from Anne Lorenz-Panzer alias Arlene´s Lace are breathtakingly beautiful. And so, this past summer, I focused on knitting holes. Wouldn´t it be great to catch a butterfly (butterfly!) with your knitting needles? Or to knit an airy double-helix? – I did not manage either. My butterfly looked like the motif of a curtain – not necessarily a bad thing but not what I was aiming for – and the helix never looked right from the right and wrong side, both at once. Then Anne uploaded this project to Ravelry and that convinced me completely that my attempt had failed. I cannot compete with that at all. (Even though Anne´s project is crochetet. Still.)

I was about to give up when it happened. The stitches all came together and the composition was perfect. (If I say so myself.)

Doesn´t the patten remind you of the inflorescences of yarrows?

Nachtrag: Das Bild zeigt tatsächlich Wiesenkerbel und keine Schafgarbe, wie mir eine aufmerksame Leserin verraten hat. Ups! Aber er sieht der Schafgarbe schon sehr ähnlich.   Ahem.

Edit: The picture is actually showing keck rather than yarrows, as an attentive reader let me know. Oops! The plants look very much alike, ahem, I think.

So stand der Name fest.Was mir am Schafgarbenlace so gut gefällt, ist, dass es sehr vielseitig verwendbar ist. Mit feiner Lacewolle gestrickt, wird daraus ein hauchzarter Schal. Und mit robuster Wolle und 10er Nadeln eher fest verstrickt, wird es zum kuschelig-wärmenden Loop. Außerdem sieht es von Vorder- und Rückseite fast identisch aus.

So I had a name. What I really like about the yarrow lace is that it is very versatile. It can be knit with fine lace weight yarn to make a delicate scarf or with bulky weight yarn and ridiculously large needles – I used US#15/10 mm needles -, forming a rather dense fabric, to make a cozy loop. And, amazingly, it looks almost the same from right side and wrong side.

Wahrscheinlich werde ich noch für eine ganze Weile ein besonderes Verhältnis zu diesen eher unscheinbaren Pflanzen haben. Wie es heißt, eignen sie sich auch gut, um Verdauungsstörungen zu bekämpfen und ihre ätherischen Öle sind schleimlösend. Schon spannend.

Aber eigentlich geht es hier ja um´s Stricken. Also: Viel Spaß euch allen mit dem Muster!

I am sure I will feel specially connected to these optically rather unremarkable plants for a while from now. It is said that their leaves and blossoms are used to treat indigestions and their ethereal oils do have mucolytic properties. It´s fascinating.

But I digress. Enjoy the pattern!
